Students in 2nd grade continue to build their academic foundation and form their Christian character through core subjects with purposeful integration of Biblical principles in lessons.
In Bible, following the Purposeful Design curriculum, students focus on key narratives from the Old and New Testament, memorize Bible verses, learn lessons from Jesus’ life and teachings, and receive character education based on Biblical values such as integrity, obedience, and mercy. Students also attend Chapel weekly.
In Math, using Abeka, students continue building and gaining new skills in basic arithmetic operations- addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division- and are introduced to concepts such as place value, time, money and measurement. Students also work on problem solving with a focus on real-life applications.
In Spelling, our Purposeful Design curriculum introduces students to spelling rules and phonetic patterns as well as common sight words. This instruction aids students to decode in reading and to spell words independently.
In Reading, our Journeys curriculum challenges learners to look deeply at a variety of texts to identify story elements and also exposes them to new, meaningful vocabulary. Students also work on writing responses to reading each week, and frequently complete comprehension exercises. Chapter and picture books are frequently read aloud to students and a novel study of Charlotte’s Web is complete in the spring.
In Writing, instruction focuses on foundational skills such as: parts of speech, basic sentence construction, capitalization, punctuation, and simple grammar. Throughout the year, students engage in the writing process. They write letters, poems, narrative, informational, and opinion pieces.
In Science, using Bob Jones, students explore God’s creation through a Christian worldview completing the following three units: Matter and Motion, Earth and Space, and Living Things. Throughout the year, students participate in hands-on experiments to foster their curiosity and discuss the role of stewardship in caring for the earth. In the spring, students get to observe a butterfly’s life cycle firsthand.
In Social Studies, using Abeka, students study American history and traditions. They are introduced to community and citizenship concepts.
In each subject, technology is thoughtfully integrated to enhance student skills. Students also continue practicing their handwriting using the D’Nealian method and learn cursive. Outside of the classroom, students have music, gym, technology, and art.
Students have field trips to Huckleberry Railroad and the Howell Nature Center. Students also participate in a variety of school wide events such as Constitution Day, Math Carnival, speech meet, reading month, and assemblies.
