Third grade is a year where the students are becoming more independent workers. Students grow in a closer personal relationship with Jesus Christ as they study His life, Paul’s life, and the Holy Spirit’s ability to guide and direct all Christians using Purposeful Design curriculum. The students will lead pledges, prayer, and worship several times throughout the year in chapel.
Michigan history will be studied, using Hilldale’s educational curriculum. This in depth study beings with the First Peoples to live in the state to statehood as well as some current events.
In science they study several broad areas of earth and life science and use hands-on experiences, observation, creating models, exploring with experiments, and STEM activities. In each area the students will learn what a Christian worldview is and how books and people all come to conclusions based on their worldview. They will learn to identify what a Biblical worldview is and how it is foundational to scientists who are Christian, using Bob Jones University’s curriculum.
Third graders have two all day field trips. They enjoy Sloan Museum and Longway Planetarium in Flint, and then later visit the Michigan History Museum and Capitol Building in Lansing. These support the classroom learning in science and history.
In music the students participate in the winter and spring concerts. They complete a unit on sound and instruments with a project-based learning activity where the students create their own instruments and then host an instrument museum for the younger grades to attend.
English grammar and mathematics are traditionally taught using Abeka’s Christian school curriculum. Students will practice correct language usage and punctuation. They will memorize their multiplication tables, learn long division, common measurements and conversion, along with some simple algebraic equations. They will continue to learn and practice cursive handwriting.
Third grade joins in the elementary school celebrations of Constitution Day, One Hundredth day of School Celebration, Math Carnival, and Dr. Seuss’s Birthday Celebration.
